چکیده

Simultaneous observations of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 by International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the 2004 December outburst are analysed. The average spectrum is well described by thermal Comptonization with an electron temperature of 50 keV and Thomson optical depth τT ∼ 1 in a slab geometry. The spectral shape is almost constant during the outburst. We detect a spin-up of the pulsar with ν̇ = 8.4 × 10Hz s. The ISGRI data reveal the pulsation of X-rays at a period of 1.67 milliseconds up to ∼ 150 keV. The pulsed fraction is shown to increase from 6 per cent at 6 keV to 12–20 per cent at 100 keV. This is naturally explained by the action of the Doppler effect the exponentially cutoff Comptonization spectrum from the hot spot. The nearly sinusoidal pulses show soft lags with complex energy dependence, increasing up to 7 keV, then decreasing to 15 keV, and seemingly saturating at higher energies.

Timing an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar: Measuring the Accretion Torque in IGR J00291+5934

We present here a timing analysis of the fastest accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 using RXTE data taken during the outburst of December 2004. We corrected the arrival times of all the events for the orbital (Doppler) effects and performed a timing analysis of the resulting phase delays. In this way we find a clear parabolic trend of the pulse phase delays showing that the pulsar is ...

An Accreting Millisecond Pulsar with Black Hole-like X-ray Variability: Igr J00291+5934

IGR J00291+5934 is one of the seven accreting millisecond pulsars (AMPs) discovered so far. We report on the aperiodic timing and color analysis of its X-ray flux, using all the RXTE observations of the 2004 outburst. Flat-top noise and two harmonically related quasi-periodic oscillations, all of them at very low frequencies (0.01-0.1 Hz), were present in the power spectra during most of the ou...

Discovery of the Accretion-powered Millisecond X-ray Pulsar Igr J00291+5934

We report on observations of the sixth accretion-powered millisecond pulsar, IGR J00291+5934, with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. The source is a faint, recurrent X-ray transient initially identified by INTEGRAL. The 599 Hz (1.67 ms) pulsation had a fractional rms amplitude of 8% in the 2–20 keV range, and its shape was approximately sinusoidal. The pulses show an energy-dependent phase delay...

Discovery of the INTEGRAL X / γ - ray transient IGR J 00291 + 5934 : a Comptonised accreting ms pulsar ?

We report the discovery of a high-energy transient with the IBIS/ISGRI detector on board the INTEGRAL observatory. The source, namely IGR J00291+5934, was first detected on 2nd December 2004 in the routine monitoring of the IBIS/ISGRI 20–60 keV images. The observations were conducted during Galactic Plane Scans, which are a key part of the INTEGRAL Core Programme observations. After verifying t...

Pushing the limit on neutron star spin rates

Millisecond X-ray pulsars consist of a rapidly-spinning neutron star accreting from a low-mass stellar companion, and are the long-sought evolutionary progenitors of millisecond radio pulsars, as well as promising candidate sources for gravitational radiation. The population of these sources has grown significantly over the last three years, with the discovery of six new examples to bring the t...
